We Turn Followers Into Leaders

Harbor City Church

We are a church that turns followers into leaders.

Jesus didn’t just call people to follow Him—He formed them to lead others.

A lot of people assume leadership is for the “special few”—the loud, the confident, the naturally charismatic, the platform-ready.

But when you read the Gospels, Jesus does something remarkable: He builds His movement with ordinary people.

Fishermen. A tax collector. A political zealot. People with baggage, questions, and uneven faith—yet Jesus saw what they could become.

“And He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out…” (Mark 3:14, NKJV)

That verse is basically the leadership pipeline of Jesus: be with Him (formation), then be sent by Him (mission).

Following Is the Beginning, Not the Destination

We love followers of Jesus. That’s where everyone starts.

But the goal isn’t to stay a spiritual consumer—collecting sermons, stacking notes, and living on inspirational fumes.

The goal is transformation that turns into contribution.

“And the things that you have heard from me… commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” (2 Timothy 2:2, NKJV)

That’s not just discipleship. That’s multiplication.

What We Mean by “Leader”

When we say “leader,” we don’t mean:

  • title-chasers
  • microphone collectors
  • people who want authority without responsibility

We mean: servants with spiritual strength.

Jesus defined it like this:

“Whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant.” (Matthew 20:26, NKJV)

Kingdom leadership doesn’t start with a platform. It starts with a towel.

How We Turn Followers Into Leaders

This is a big part of our vision—not just building a crowd, but building a culture.

1) We train people in the Word and the Spirit

Confidence comes from clarity, and clarity comes from truth. A leader who isn’t rooted will always drift.

2) We give people opportunities to serve

Serving is leadership in its earliest form. If you can be faithful with a small assignment, God can trust you with a larger one.

3) We build teams, not stars

The Kingdom doesn’t run on superheroes. It runs on healthy teams with shared mission and mutual honor.

4) We develop character as much as competence

Skill can get you noticed. Character keeps you trusted.

5) We release people

A healthy church doesn’t just “use” leaders—it sends them. We celebrate when people step into what God has for them, even if it costs us.

Why This Matters

Baltimore doesn’t need a bigger audience.

Baltimore needs more leaders:

  • leaders in homes
  • leaders in schools
  • leaders in business, medicine, law, and government
  • leaders in neighborhoods
  • leaders on mission

We believe the local church should be a leadership factory—producing disciples who walk with God, love people, and carry responsibility well.

Your Next Step

If you’ve been a follower for a while, here’s the question:

Are you ready to step into leadership?

You don’t have to have it all together. You just have to be willing to grow, stay teachable, and take responsibility for something bigger than yourself.

Because the call of Jesus is still the same: Follow Me—and I’ll make you into something.
